The Aviator, an American Honey Porter

We're do I start, this was an amazing day and brew I got brew it up with my other brother in law Rich Simmons

Instead of writing linguistically lyrics of harmoniously harmony words, I'm just going to write a list of the cool stuff

  • Fist time I brewed outside
  • Brewed with brother-in-law Rich Simmons
    • Sarah's sister Erika's Husband.
  • Wanted a light honey summer ale, got a black dark Londonly Porter, lol
  • Honestly didn't get a OG, so I guessed it was about 1.052
  • Brewed a solid 5 gallon keg with an extra 23 12oz bottles
  • I cold crashed all the beer, so I don't know if the bottles are going to carbonate correctly.
  • This beer was dark, the darkest beer I ever had. It wasn't hoppy, is was sweet, but dark, you could taste the color of the beer.

  • Style

    American Honey Porter

    The classic porter character of roast and coffee is beautifully balanced by a pleasant bitterness and a slight nutty taste. This is a beer which will be fantastic fresh, and even better if you can keep your hands off long enough to let it age! The honey character is nearly buried under the porter character, but provides an interesting and refreshing spin on the classic porter!

  • Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM)

    9lbs

    Grain used in the mash. Base malt for all beer styles
  • Chocolate Malt (350.0 SRM)

    12oz

    Dark malt that gives a rich red or brown color and nutty flavor. Use for: Brown ales, porters, some stouts Maintains some malty flavor, not as dark as roasted malt.
  • Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM)

    8oz

    Adds body, color and improves head retention. Also called "Crystal" malt.
  • Black (Patent) Malt (500.0 SRM)

    4oz

    Dark color and dry roasted flavor characteristic of Stouts and Porters Use for: Coloring in small amounts, or flavoring of Stouts and Porters in larger amounts.
  • Chinook Hops [13.00 %]

    1oz Boil 60.0 min

    Strong versatile bittering hop Used for: Ales, porters, stouts Aroma: Heavy and spicy aroma
  • Cascade Hops [5.50 %]

    1oz Boil 1.0 min

    Aroma: Strong spicy, floral, grapefruit character.
  • Yeast

    California Ale (White Labs #WLP001) [35.49 ml]

    Very clean flavor, balance and stability. Accentuates hop flavor Versitile - can be used to make any style ale.
  • American Honey

    3lbs At 5min

    Used to lighten flavor and body when substituted for malt.
  • Whirlfloc

    1 Tablet At 15min

    Used to clear up the beer.
  • IBU

    27.9 IBUs

    International Bittering Units. The measurement of bitterness of the beer ranging from 0 to 100, where 100 is super hoppy.
  • SRM Color Scale
