Christmas Gold

Pure Gold I tell ya. This was such a good beer to make and drink. The Beer Master General got to come down again and visit for a couple of days. During that time we took a trip to the Ballast Point Tasting and Beer Part Shop. We just randomly strolled through the ingredients Isle and Dad being such the great master of brews that he is picked out just a few simple ingredients and announced that "this should be good".

We spent the next day brewing and did a couple things different, like instead of a hard boil which would burn off half the pots water. Also in tandem with the copper wort chiller we used a bed of ice water to cool the water before it went into the chiller. So we cooled it down quick I say about 1/2 an hour and actually came out above 5 gallons of beer. We also used a paint stirrer attached to a drill and aerated the beer amazingly well.

So I let it sit for a few weeks fermenting and what was really cool is Sarah my princess got me a Keg-orator for Christmas and there's a big horrible story of putting it together but with the help of Brew Master General, we got it all hooked up and CO2 attached, that saves at least 3 weeks of waiting for the beer to carbonate.

The NFL Conference Championships were playing on that Sunday and I invited some of my friends over and we killed the whole five gallons of beer plus more of what they've brought over. All in all this was the best beer I've brewed yet along with my dad. Now onto the next one and I'm so happy that I don't have to wait for ever for it to carbonate, now that I have a keg-orator!

The Brew

  • Style

    Pale Ale

    Absolutely Delcious
  • Starting Water

    8.81 gallons

All Distilled Water. Just keeping record of the amount of water I've started with befroe each brew.
  • Pre Boil Gravity

    1.050

Taking the gravity before the boil, to make sure the boil went well.
  • Original Gravity

    1.046

The Original Gravity is the specific gravity measured before fermentation. Gravity is the ratio of the density of a sample to the density of water. Basically sugar vs water. OG - FG = ABV
  • Final Gravity

    1.010

The Final Gravity is the specific gravity measured at the completion of fermentation. Basically sugar vs water. OG - FG = ABV
  • ABV

    4.7%

Alcohole By Volume. How much alcohol is in the beer, the higher the drunker you get! This one the math and gravities were a little off.
  • Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM)

    9lbs

Refreshing and hoppy, yet with sufficient supporting malt. An American adaptation of English pale ale, reflecting indigenous ingredients (hops, malt, yeast, and water). Often lighter in color, cleaner in fermentation by-products, and having less caramel flavors than English counterparts. There is some overlap in color between American pale ale and American amber ale. The American pale ale will generally be cleaner, have a less caramelly malt profile, less body, and often more finishing hops.
  • Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM)

    1lbs 8oz

Significantly increases foam/head retention and body of the beer. Also sold under the names "Dextrine" and "Cara - Foam "
  • Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM)

    4oz

Adds body, color and improves head retention. Also called "Crystal" malt.
  • Caramel/Crystal Malt - 120L (120.0 SRM)

    4oz

Adds body, color and improves head retention. Also called "Crystal" malt.
  • Magnum [13.20 %]

    .5oz at 60min.

German Hallertauer hybrid, widely used in Germany Used for: German ales and lagers Aroma: Good aroma and stable spicy flavor
  • Fuggles [3.90 %]

    1oz at 10min.

Used for: General purpose bittering/aroma for English Ales, Dark Lagers Aroma: Mild, soft, grassy, floral aroma Substitute: East Kent Goldings, Williamette.
  • Whirlfloc

    .5 Tablet

Used to clear up the beer.
  • Yeast

English Ale (White Labs #WLP002) [35.49 ml]

These microscopic fungi are the mojo in the juice when it comes to alcohole. They consume sugar, then piss carbonation and shit alchole, then reproduce and do it again.
  • Unflavored Gelatin

    .5 packet

Clear, unflavored gelatin can be added to the brew during fermenting as a clearing agent much like whirlfloc. I added this between my Primary and Secondary.
  • IBU

    24.2

International Bittering Units. The measurement of bitterness of the beer ranging from 0 to 100, where 100 is super hoppy.
  • SRM Color Scale

    6.5

Number guide to beer color, 0 - 40 Yellow into Black
    color guide
  • Finial Amount

    5.3 Gallons

The finial amount of beer I got at the end of the whole brewing process

The best part about brewing this beer was my good buddy Andy Muns came over and actually he's the reason the beer is called Musingen. We figured it's a German beer and he's German and this was his first time brewering so we just named the beer after him.
